Russ Riviere's life was the natural consequence of an extraordinary
personality fused with an equally extraordinary intellect interacting with a
historically turbulent and challenging background.
His immediate reaction to any challenge, physical or mental, was to take it
head on. This often made him appear to be a daredevil - but that doesn't
quite fit the facts.
After surviving an onslaught of near catastrophic health troubles for a
number of years, including non-Hodgkins lymphoma, he was finally
defeated by a second assault of lymphoma in April of 2004. My remark at the
time was that he was the most recent casualty of the Viet Nam war.
